It is hard for me to lose myself in a book if i find myself getting annoyed by how much the story is dragging. Bloodman could have done with some heavy editing, and probably about less pages.
Several people have mentioned how shocking the ending was. I went into this book knowing absolutely nothing about the plot, but I still managed to figure out where the story was going, and what the supposed "twist" would end up being within the first pages.

What was the point of the fire and jumping through the window? And why waste so much time painting thousands of canvases? It just seemed a little far fetched to me. The main character, Special Agent Cole also seems a step too close to creepy to avoid detection for so long. His detective skill and the other less palatable one!?
I felt the story line dragged a little - there were a few times when I just wanted to get on with finding answers and it felt like Special Agent Cole was just filling time I felt like the author expected the gore of the murder scenes to take the place of real action and drama, but i just found it gross rather than entertaining. All in all it was an okay book.

Most of his fingers were burned off, his face ruined on one side. Jake had his own demons to deal with as well. Alcoholism, addiction, the pacemaker in his heart with a battery to jolt him when the organ ran to fast, to slow, the result of a lot of heroin before he got it under control. Some time in the past, there was four months completely lost, the result being the tats on his torso and arms. No memory at all of who did it, why, and how he'd paid for it. Experts had said it was five hundred hours of work. And it was unusual that he had lost those four months. He had an eidetic memory, useful in his job as an independent contractor with the FBI. He was able to walk through a crime scene, remember it all, and virtually put himself in the mind of the perpetrator.
He'd left all those years ago for several reasons, chief that he didn't like his cold father. He wasn't in town long before the local Sheriff called him in for some help on a case, the okay given by his handler with the Bureau. Two bodies had been found in a home, a woman and a small boy, just a few years old.
Nothing to identify them. And here was the thing. They had been skinned! A horrible case that had the small town law enforcement in a quandary.
The next day another body turns up, one of the nurses that was helping his father at the hospital. Jake recognized a picture in the home right away. Jake remembered noting that she resembled his late mother. Skinned as well! His past was coming back to haunt him. When he was twelve, his mother had left late one night to get cigarettes and a bag of cookies for her Jakey. Her car was found hours later and a few hundred yards away, her skinned body!
Jake is intent on solving this thing from the past, but getting his wife and three year old son out of town immediately. They'd come down to join him this same day. You see, there was another killer bearing down on Long Island. A hurricane that would hit shore as a category 5 and the island was being evacuated.
This was a page turner, a bloody novel, one that I had a hard time putting down. And every time I thought I might have a handle on the story, a bit of a twist gets thrown. And the final one. If you don't mind a novel that doesn't stint on blood with compelling story telling, most highly recommended.

He can look at a violent scene and recreate the killing in his mind. So, good, yes? But… for me and this is coming from a lifelong dark-Horror fan some of the violence crossed the line. Hard shit to read. But most troubling to me was the love story at the center, between Cole and his wife. She likes for him to choke her during sex. Hard enough to bust blood vessels in her eyes. Not cool. And that, in the end, is my litmus test for books. I love the way Pobi treats the hurricane as a character of its own, it certainly builds suspense quite well as it nears shore.

Speculating who the actual killer is was too easy as I figured it out early on. He suffers from blackouts; and he was always having conversations with himself throughout the entire book.
Also, why would he wait until the day of the hurricane to get his wife and son out of town? Any normal person would have packed them up as soon as they heard about it.
Also, for someone who loves his family so much, he didn't even phone her telling her to NOT show up because a hurricane is going to hit. No mother would put her child in harm's way like that. Would I recommend this book? Tell readers to ignore it? This will probably go on and do very well, because it will fulfill people's expectations of a thriller. It's deceptively conventional. I didn't hate it either. Two stars mean I thought it was "OK" which is what I feel about this book.

There are very few of my reading friends that I would recommend this dark murder mystery to because of the graphic descriptions of violent acts, but it grabbed me from page one for a wild ride into a tormented world.
Jake Cole is an FBI profiler - "Before Jake walked onto a murder scene, he wrapped parts of himself up and put them away in a secure area of his mind so they wouldn't be a part of the process that both repulsed and fascinated him. Pobi has crafted an unbelievably brutal and heart-pounding story that never lets up until the shocking and unsettling end.
Be forewarned - be ready for extreme and disturbing scenes, but also for the impressive action story of "Jack Cole and his traveling road show of death.

Though not artistically inclined in the literal sense, Jake can nevertheless paint an exquisite picture. One only he can see, Jake has the unique ability to recreate with disturbing, haunting accuracy every detail of a murder in his mind after viewing the scene of the crime.
The victims were brutally beaten, then skinned alive. First and foremost a warning; Bloodman is not a book for those who are disturbed by detailed descriptions of murder, including that of a child. It puts Jake in the position of trying to deconstruct not just the psychology of a killer, but of kin as well.
Interwoven with the main storyline are updates on the growth and approach of Hurricane Dylan, which serve as literal representation of the growing danger and impending showdown which is destined to take place in Montauk.

Not even a sniff, Bloodman bamboozled me — in a good way! From my blog This is categorized as a thriller but I think it should be categorized for the horror genre fans with a psychological thriller feel. I love reading about serial killers - I even started a Serial Killer Reading Challenge so the excitement and expectation is already set high. This is a debut by Robert Pobi that I can see huge potential for his future but not quite there yet. With some more experience I would say he could be in the same category as Dennis Lehane and Stephen King.

The beginning was great, edgy with numerous suspense moments to keep you wondering. The serial killer the police are looking for skins his victims so definitely a novel for those that can handle gruesome details. There is a hurricane coming into the town also, so the police are dealing with evacuation but also trying to hunt down the killer. We have those scenarios but Jake initially comes into town to care for his father who has Alzeheimers, so many twist to try and play with your mind but for those that are fans of this genre I think will be able to figure it out.
By the time I got half way I was starting to get bored, I felt numerous things were being repeated and not benefiting the investigation so they felt like filler instead of adding to the story. My disclaimer I never do this so will feel less guilty stating. I had pages left and decided to read the last 3 chapters, it was what I had expected so I didn't bother to complete, so in the end I probably didn't read 75 pages.
Some scenes were amazing in my opinion and can be looked at as for shock value to others. I do enjoy the unorthodox detectives but I don't know if Jake truly passes the test as being as highly respected in the profession as the author wanted us to believe.
